The Hollywood writers’ strike is currently stalled and their union, Writers Guild of America (WGA), is planning to deal directly with Hollywood studios instead of the organization representing the latter group. Regardless of the results of the new negotiations, Jay Leno and Conan O’Brien plan to come back on the air Jan 2nd with new episodes, sans written jokes. They’ve indicated that this is to prevent having to fire other staff. David Letterman’s production company might try to deal independently with the WGA.
Some talkshow hosts have been paying non-writer staff out of their own pockets.
