Three new theatrical movie releases made it into the top 10 of the box office this past weekend, with two in the top 3. It’s no surprise that the newest incarnation of a beloved Dr. Seuss story, Horton Hears a Who!, made it to number one, though neither Richard Roeper (Ebert & Roeper) nor his guest had much good to say about it.
Roeper also put down 10,000 B.C. (which opened the previous weekend), saying the that CGI sucked, but his guest liked the movie. According to them, film blog Rotten Tomatoes claims that only 7% of film bloggers liked 10,000 B.C. I happen to be one of them then, though I haven’t posted a review yet. (I’ve always felt that Roeper is extremely hard to please, so I always take his criticism with a grain of salt. I really hope Roger Ebert is recovering well and will return soon. I really miss him. Roeper has an irritating tendency to insult his guest reviewers - most of whom are far more intelligent and balanced in their views than he has ever shown.)
Sure, 10,000 B.C. isn’t a great story, but the CGI isn’t as bad as Roeper says, and it’s an entertaining movie in a National Geographic sort of way. (I do have to agree that there are many historical inaccuracies.)
If you’d rather watch something grittier, new release Doomsday is a far more entertaining bit of mostly unoriginal story, with some very original elements. New tough girl Rhona Mitra is a determined, butt-kicking dynamo.
